About James O.

Undergraduate student at the University of Otago majoring in Business Management and History (BACom) with a minor in Political Science. I will have obtained these multidisciplinary qualifications by the summer of 2024.During my tertiary studies, I've sought to work in roles as an agent of positive change for New Zealand's key industries and business sectors. In this pursuit, I've been immensely privileged to work for some of New Zealand's leading industry associations and their associated business networks (Employers and Manufacturers Association, BusinessNZ, National Road Carriers, ExportNZ) in a variety of different capacities. These capacities have included working as a Legal Admin, Business Analyst, Project Coordinator, Business Administrator, and Business Helpline Support. This experience has provided me with notable experience in administration, project management, stakeholder management, content creation, interviewing, process mapping, operational strategy, data cleansing, customer service, and job inductions/training. As a result, I've been in positions of ideation, decision-making, and implementation.A bit about me:My unconventional education in Business Management (with a specialty focus on SCM), History, and Political Science provides unique conceptualisations of society that can be applied across a multitude of fields. I'm passionate about implementing and supporting emerging theories in supply chain efficiency, risk management, project management, business strategy, and corporate social responsibility in my workplace. It is my fundamental aspiration to work as an ambassador for New Zealand business across the world and, in doing so, foster cross-cultural relations in the pursuit of mutual socio-economic benefit.

Broadly, my role was to enhance the organisational effectiveness of NRC by improving its capability to service its members as New Zealand’s preeminent transport industry association. Specifically, I was tasked with finding and scoping a new bundled CRM, AMS, EMS, and CMS that matched our strategic objectives as well as day-to-day requirements. As this was ongoing, I assisted in optimising processes to increase workflow efficiency and customer services. Finally, I was also involved in policy research and drafting to advocate for the interests of NRC’s members in the public sector.
  • Ema
    Business Support Coordinator
    Ema Nov 2021 - Dec 2023
    Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand
Previously, I worked for the Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA) as a Business Support Coordinator. As partners to the Activate Tamaki Makaurau (ATM) project, I was employed with the EMA on a summer contract to operate the Service Provider piece. In October 2021, the New Zealand Labour Government announced a $60 million support package to help Auckland's SME's remedy the implications of multiple COVID-19 lockdowns. This support transformed into ATM and was distributed through two available consultancy grants, Business Advice and an Implementation Grant. It was my role to closely manage and support the success of incoming clients in their application process and connect them to our highly qualified consultants. This also meant I was required to support EMA consultants with relevant project-specific resources and updates. The skills primarily used in this role consisted of intensive stakeholder management, resource creation, and reporting. To further expand my involvement in the project, I also worked closely across the EMA's 'Activate Tamaki Makaurau Community' which was created as a online social platform for Auckland businesses to connect and obtain subsidised resources from all of ATM's partners. I created, moderated, and helped attract and retain the engagement of over 4000 users with information and support.Since the projects finish in June 2022, my employment was extended onto a casual contract (full-time over Summer) where I worked across Membership, ExportNZ, Partnerships, and the Legal and Consultancy Departments. Through these positions, I gained notable experience in administration, project coordination, stakeholder management, content creation, interviewing top NZ exporters, process mapping, operational strategy, data cleansing, customer service representation, and job inductions/training. As a result, I’d been in positions of both decision-making and implementation.
