About James O Rourke

I joined the yachting industry in September 2015 as a deckhand on a 74m yacht. I learned a huge amount in this position but after learning the workings on board, I have aspired to become an engineer. Now that I have started I am looking forward to progressing my career through courses and experience, with the end goal of one day being chief engineer on board a super yacht.

Busy family use and charter yacht. I joined here a few days before an owners trip. he had already been onboard at the start of the season and wasn't happy with the AV setup. He was coming back and i was warned that the system needed to function better than it had before. It has a central system and all sources are sent from the racks to the rooms through a Crestron NVX system. iPads that were laggy and WAP's that failed randomly were some of the problems that I came up against in the 18day trip. Next is to put a plan into place to improve the system for the owner's winter season. We will be updating the GUI on the iPads, installing Starlink and replacing a number of WAP's. This will hopefully improve the owners experience onboard.

    M/Y Madsummer May 2022 - Aug 2022
I joined Madsummer just as they arrived into the Med, we had a two-week shipyard window which had been cut from two months. As you can imagine this made for a very busy time. We were hauled out and the stabilizers were given a 10,000-hour service. One external door had lots of problems and hadn't worked in two years, this took a lot of my time as it needed two new motors and all new limit switches set up. After those two weeks the owner arrived and had a number of groups of friends join him over the coming weeks. Madsummer is a 95M that ran with only 3 engineers, so it was very busy. I was involved in everything but fully responsible for AV/IT and electrical distribution onboard. the electrical systems were good and I didn't have any major failures during my time. This meant that I was used as a 3rd engineer a lot more and was again in charge of tenders and toys. This kept me very busy as the tenders were custom and not very well designed.

    M/Y Huntress Jun 2021 - Mar 2022
I joined M/Y Huntress at the end of a busy yard period and just 10 days before the owner would be stepping on for a 12 week season. Huntress had an AV system that was all local sources in each area. It was not in great shape and did need some upgrades with I started to plan but I never got the funding to update the system. As this was my first ETO role, I had a lot to learn about the different systems onboard, the bridge equipment was Kongsberg, it had a number of failures during the season but calm heads and reading the manuals was often enough to get us back in control. this was the first boat where I was working with Kero as my firewall and for traffic management. I also learned a lot about VSAT and TVROs. The set up onboard had been incorrect and the blockage zones were wrong. I again learned a huge amount during my time on this vessel and very much enjoyed my time onboard.
  • M/Y Forever One
    2Nd Engineer
    M/Y Forever One Nov 2017 - Feb 2021
Rotational 2nd Engineer onboard a heavily used private vessel. The owners would come on for up to six months at a time and would have different groups of guests come and going every ten days or so. As part of the engineering team on board this meant that we had very little down time from guests and needed to keep everything up and running without disrupting the guest trips. Onboard here was my first opportunity to get involved in a major AV upgrade, before this upgrade all sources were local in cabins and salons, we moved everything to central racks, used a pooling system and switching matrix to get the sources to the cabin. this was a very valuable experience for me and really taught me a lot about the system that I would be in control of for the next four years. Onboard here i was also in charge of toys and tenders as well as most monthly planned maintenance
  • M/Y Blush
    2Nd Engineer
    M/Y Blush Nov 2016 - Nov 2017
My time on board Blush was another learning curve! It was fantastic to work with a great chief who gave me a solid foundation in fault finding of defects onboard, what was a very busy charter yacht so we didn't get much down time during the season. I was responsible for operating and maintaining generators and main engines (MTU's). Monthly planned maintenance such as services hot water systems, water makers, fan coils. Keeping stock up to date and ordering of spares. Updating idea with new stock and jobs cards ticked off when completed. During my time here I also built a number of storage solutions for different spares to be kept onboard.
  • My Romanza
    2Nd Engineer
    My Romanza Aug 2016 - Nov 2016
    Palma/Ft. Lauderdale
I joined this 38M yacht as 2nd engineer for a crossing and yard period. I have undertaken a number of duties to date such as main engine oil filter change and service of the generators. I have serviced all air handlers on board as well as repairing and servicing anchor capstans, descaling the hot water boilers and repairing a number of leaks in the grey water lines. I have made gaskets and replaced a number of non return valves, replaced crew reading lights and sealed all the crew showers as they had been leaking into the bilge.
  • My Cocoa Bean
    Deckhand/Handyman
My Cocoa Bean Sep 2015 - Aug 2016
    South Of France
This was my first job on board a super yacht. I joined this 74m Trinity built yacht in La Ciotat shipyard where we spent 7 months. During this time I undertook many projects and tasks, such as basic wash downs, varnishing capping rails, teak treatments, sika work, fairing and use of awlgrip paint systems. I have also completed work on the interior of the yacht such as the manufacture of new metal shelving units (welded joints) in crew areas. I have fabricated and fitted shelving to crew cabins, fitted storage units in the bridge and completed a number of repair jobs in guest areas.

    Newton International School 2013 - 2015
In this school I was responsible for planning and implanting English, Math’s, History, Geography, Science and art lessons for a group of 24 students that were between the ages of 7-9. I very much enjoyed this time as I had never taught students of this age before
