CurrentHouston Institute (HI) is an independent, academic non-profit established by faculty, students, and friends of Rice University. Its mission is to help the people of Rice University think deeply about the best way to live through the study of the humanities, especially philosophy and literature. To do this, HI sponsors reading groups, lectures, and mentoring focusing on fundamental questions related to what it means to live a good life. Though we have a special interest in virtue and in classical accounts of human flourishing (as seen in thinkers such as Aristotle and Aquinas), we are committed to exploring a range of perspectives in a fair-minded way. Any student or faculty committed to truth-seeking, to reasoned argument in a spirit of friendship, is always welcome, regardless of views.
