Year-long Masters project in association with CERN and UCL High Energy Physics, involving detection of the Higgs boson at the ATLAS Detector experiment.Implemented machine learning models in both Python and C++ to improve detector sensitivity to the H→bb Higgs decay mode. Principally used gradient-boosted decision trees in XGBoost and convolutional neural networks in TensorFlow on large-scale detector datasets with CUDA-enabled GPUs.Work on this ML-based analysis proved integral towards the official discovery of the new H→bb Higgs boson decay channel in July 2017, providing the first experimental evidence of the Higgs boson coupling to quarks.
