My research interests have grown to now include the rapid production of willow planting stock for short rotation coppice biomass, sustainability of using of sweeteners and sweetness enhancers in food and drink products; upscaling of smart local energy systems; rearing insects for food and feed; scaling up of innovation in the water-energy-food nexus; and the environmental impact of portable electronic devices. My research is always part of multidisciplinary teams looking at multiple aspects of each of the above areas. My previous roles included working for Sharp Corporation as a senior R&D scientist, developing novel lighting technologies for commercialisation. This included being the lead optical designer on the worlds first prototype laser headlight. This work resulted in multiple granted patents. My education is in Physics, for which I gained a PhD in microwave interactions with subwavelength structures in metal.

Research FellowUniversity Of Surrey Oct 2015 - Oct 2018GuildfordResearch Fellow on the Stepping Up ProjectStepping Up is an EPSRC funded project investigating how niche innovation in sustainability at the Water-Energy-Food-Nexus might affect wider systems if they were to be scaled up.My role in the project is identification of exemplars of such sustainable innovation who may act as case studies. I collect information about their innovations which feeds into models of the current systems. The models can be used to to understand the changes that their innovation may have upon the system if scaled up to become the norm.
