I'm participating in a research project into the invasiveness of the common garden ornamentals English holly, cherry laurel, and Portuguese laurel. We are in the process of aging samples of Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) through analysis of tree rings. Samples of plants are taken near the root crown, or as close to the base of the individual as possible. The samples are sanded down for fineness of detail in rings. Once prepared, the pieces are placed under a low power microscope and the rings are analyzed. Rings are analyzed first for presence, then a determination is made as to whether the ring qualifies as an annular ring or an inter-annular ring, caused by stress or other factors on the individual during the growing season.

Peer advisors are experienced students who assist newer students with many of the same things that professional advisors would. I advised first year and pre-major students on such things as how to register for classes in upcoming quarters, how to navigate through resources available to students, planning for degrees, and understanding which classes to take and why. I also helped students with any sort of general issues or concerns they may have with school. I meet face to face with students on a drop-in basis, usually for sessions lasting less than 15 minutes. I also assisted with hiring and interviewing candidates for new peer advising positions for the 2015-2016 academic year.

I gave tours and presentations to incoming students during orientations while collaborating with co-workers and taking direction from coordinators and leads. I emailed students with important information about upcoming events and orientations, and maintained a mentoring roster of around 70 students. I helped them with finding resources, pointed them in the direction of where they could find info and turn in required paperwork. I also helped students with advice regarding time management, course load, and finding the classes that work for them.

I performed essential masonry restoration duties like pointing, demolition work, waterproofing and sealing, and cleaning using chemical products. I also performed safety inspections on critical equipment like tie-back ropes, aerial scaffolds, and fall protection equipment. I have extensive experience operating on walls above three stories.

At Sound Salmon Solutions I worked as a scientific technician for their habitat restoration programs. Applying herbicides to invasive species using sprayers and direct application, using mechanical equipment to maintain restoration sites, and planting native species were the most common parts of the job. Often I would help with volunteer planting or cleanup projects, with groups of over 50 people being common. I also participated in some field monitoring and observations of restoration sites, as well as data collection.
