Following a project at university, I utilised my skills in Adobe InDesign, journalism, PR and Social Media to embark on a new chapter in my career; starting my own music entertainment website. Distorted Sound Magazine was founded in late April/early May 2015 and serves as an alternative music website with a twist. Every month there is a digital magazine published which contains all of the traits of the music magazine industry. Usual duties entail: Negotiating with PR firms and Record Labels for pitchesLeading/managing my team of 90+ writers and photographersManaging the publication’s social media pages.Assessing and updating a range of administrative tasks and date entry via Google Docs/Sheets,Analysing web traffic through Google Analytics Managing the website itself, which is powered through Wordpress. Aside from the editorial and marketing aspect of running the publication, I often take a hands role in producing content for the website including original features, reviews and interviews. Since the outlet's creation in 2015, I have driven the website to hit monthly views that average between 60-100,000 and the social media pages have likes/followers in the thousands.

Spent a six week placement at a community radio station in Stoke-on-Trent. Duties included:Writing original features and album reviews. These would often be completed within a short timescale, usually several hours, after extensive research and drafting on the artist in question.Basic administration and data entry tasks like filing, organising the music library, moving documents onto the shared server.Providing assistance to the chief music journalist as requested. This would usually involve assisting in research for future articles that the station would be posting to their website.

In December 2014 I was invited to join the team at Rocksins.com, a website dedicated to coverage of heavy metal.Over my time at the webzine I have reviewed many records, interviewed a lot of bands, wrote several online features and become a key writer at the publication. From that, bigger opportunities become available to me; covering the prestigious Slam Dunk Festival in 2015 was one such example of how I was a responsible and trusted member of press. Contributing to Rocksins has helped build up my key skills in journalism, especially when it comes to writing reviews.

In May 2015, I made contact with Darren Sadler, the consulting editor for Terrorizer Magaze. A leading UK magazine covering heavy metal. Since my first assignment in May, I have regularly conducted interviews with bands, wrote features and reviews that have now appeared in the print of the magazine.

Alongside my editorial position at Distorted Sound, I also was a promotions trainee at First Choice Homes Oldham. My duties in this position sits in the marketing team whereby I have worked on various projects. These include; the creation and editing of the Social Impact Report (as part of the First Five Celebrations), writing news content for FCHO's internet & Intranet, assisting with the set up of events and coordinating with the design digital team to assist with the upload of content to the new revamped FCHO website.

I have had two articles commissioned by the website thisisFINLAND.fi. Utilising my knowledge of heavy metal and music journalism I constructed two articles for the website which resulted in mass sharing across their social media and a host of views to their website. The articles were based around the Finnish metal scene and it included a trip to the country to attend and cover the annual Tuska Festival in Helsinki. This was the first time I had been commissioned by a foreign publication and it demonstrates my flexibility with my writing style.The two articles I wrote for the website are available to read below!

Throughout my final year at Staffordshire University my dissertation was based around the management of the student radio station, OMG. My role was the Gigs & Events manager. Under this role throughout the year I organised live music events on university campus alongside organising social events for the society and helped organise club nights at The Underground, a venue in Stoke-on-Trent.The live events were always considered a success; both in financial profit, attendance and enjoyment of the events. The role helped me build my skills in event management, artist liaison, booking agent and team management. These invaluable skills have helped me expand my platter of skills and experience to which I can apply to a variety of roles in the workplace.

As well as being the gigs & events manager for One Media Group I was a regular writer for OMG's website (omgstaffs.com). I have done many album reviews and conducted interviews with established musicians. (Amon Amarth being a personal highlight)This has further boosted my skill-set in negotiating with PR agencies and record labels and adding more experience as a music journalist

For seven months I contributed as a freelance for Mutiny Press, an entertainment website covering alternative music. Over the course of the seven months I wrote several album reviews of upcoming records and interviewed some big names in the alternative scene. A personal highlight was interviewing every band on one tour (Born of Osiris, After The Burial, Betraying The Martyrs, Buried in Verona).
