About James Young

Growing up around a Naval community in Patuxent River, Maryland I knew I was destined to continue my family’s tradition of serving in the military. My fascination with mechanics and technology was first sparked as a young kid where I would frequently visit my father’s work whether it be with DynCorp or McDonnell Douglas. I recall walking around the hangar and ask questions about the various airplanes and helicopters that he worked on, and sometimes having the opportunity to climb inside some of them. I felt like I was on top of the world being a 10-year-old and telling my friends I got to sit in a F-18 Hornet. Before graduating high school, I made the decision to follow in my father’s footsteps of joining the military in an aviation career field. However, I would break the tradition of serving in the Navy and instead joined the Army. It was time for me to begin my journey at becoming a part of something bigger than myself. I decided to become an AH-64D Apache Longbow maintainer mainly because I knew it was the most technologically advanced helicopter in the world and I wanted to be a part of a team that could positively impact the pilots that fly it and the people on the ground relying on its support from above. I also knew that this path would present many unique challenges and opportunities. During my 20+ years of serve, I have progressed at every level within the aviation field. I’m a firm believer that if you surround yourself with successful people, you too will be successful and that if you take care of your team, they will take care of you in return. I have been a part of many successful teams and received many accolades during my career but know nothing is done individually. Let’s be honest, Tom Brady couldn’t have won six Super Bowls by himself. After my time serving in the Army comes to an end, I’m excited to continue my service as a part of another team and develop from unique experiences.Throughout my life I have had many opportunities to explore various diverse cultures around the world. Traveling is one of my passions and it has taken me to six continents and extensively throughout Europe. I also like to test myself both physically and mentally. If someone doubts in me, I push myself harder to prove them wrong or when someone sees the potential in me, I push myself, so I don’t fail myself or them. I credit Bruce Henderson, who was one of my high school teachers for a lot of my success. He saw my potential when I didn’t, and I honestly don’t think I would be where I am today if it wasn’t for him opening up my eyes.
