Opened Equal Rights’ Kos office in January 2020. Responsibilities included finding office space, establishing partnerships with other NGOs on Kos, and contacting the asylum service, police, and camp authorities. Represent asylum seekers detained at the Kos Pre-Removal Detention Center applying for asylum at the first instance (administrative) stage and for family reunification, including interview preparation and accompaniment. Support Greek attorney in filing appeals and objections to detention. Preparing reports on the practices towards Syrian asylum seekers and conditions in the detention center on Kos. Manage 1-2 long-term interns.

Assisted asylum seekers in Greece with family reunification procedures. Prepared and accompanied clients to their asylum interviews in front of the Greek Asylum Service and European Asylum Support Office. Submitted interim measures to the European Court of Human Rights for homeless unaccompanied minors, clients with serious medical vulnerabilities, and asylum seekers detained throughout Greece. Prepared a report on the conditions in the Vial Hotspot on island of Chios during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Assisting with representation of a client preparing for his individual asylum hearing. Work includes preparing the client for his hearing, conducting interviews, editing the client’s affidavit, preparing evidence, and writing a legal brief. Researching and preparing materials for another client’s VAWA cancellation application.

NYU International Law and Human Rights fellow. Supported the refugee status determination team by observing interviews and writing assessments determining individuals’ refugee status. Conducted country condition research on the status of Christian Egyptians and the Anfal Campaign during the Iraq-Iran war. Assisted with emergency project for a group of Syrian refugees.

Conducted research looking that helps answer the question “what is public safety?” Primarily responsible for pulling new sources and writing short memos on the most relevant ones.

Conducted interviews with clients seeking asylum and helped clients prepare affidavits for their asylum applications. Assisted with name change applications, attended hearings, researched general civil legal questions in areas such as housing and disability law.

Conducted client interviews, wrote affidavits, and researched country conditions for asylum and U-visa cases, working primarily with clients from Arabic-speaking countries. Researched questions of immigration law and wrote a section for a defensive asylum brief arguing that a Haitian women’s rights activist was a member of a particular social group.
