About Jamie Macaulay
I recently graduated from the University of Southampton with an MEng in Aeronautics & Astronautics. My passion for engineering led me to an enriching placement at Dyson, where I worked as a Fluid Dynamics Engineer. During this time, I developed expertise in 1D modelling using Simulink, predicting fluid subsystem and product performance. My role included RANS CFD modelling using ANSYS Fluent for compressor and heat sink optimization. I had the unique opportunity to handle six in-flight projects within the Fluids+ team, bridging research and manufacturing. I was solely responsible for delivering the aerodynamic performance of an in-flight product and utilized Monte Carlo 1D modelling to forecast prototype and end-of-line performance. Moreover I was exposed to aeroacoustics which I later took as a module in my 4th year.Collaboration was a cornerstone of my role, working closely with over 60 design engineers to optimize designs and lead a research project on compressor noise and pressure rise due to inlet flow distortion. I also developed various Matlab scripts for automating data processing and contributed to HARM analysis. In my final year, I was part of a group design project titled "Tube-launched UAV," this was shortlisted for the Shell Innovation Award. We designed a UAV tailored for search and rescue, integrating a unique folding wings and a tube-launch mechanism for rapid deployment. The project involved a fixed-wing design with greater wind resistance and range over a multi-rotor. My role as systems lead was critical in ensuring that all subsystems met their requirements through rigorous testing and de-risking. The project showcased innovative solutions and effective project management, culminating in a successful UAV launch.Through these experiences, I have honed my skills in aerodynamic analysis, systems engineering, aeroacoustics and collaborative engineering, all while pushing the boundaries of aerospace technology. I am eager to bring my expertise in fluid dynamics and aircaft design to new and challenging projects in the aerospace industry.
