About Jami Mathewson

In 2013, my team at the Wikimedia Foundation — the nonprofit that powers Wikipedia — spun off our successful and promising education program to expand our impact on the world’s biggest open educational resource. I'd spent two years coordinating the program, growing its participation and impact, and working with a volunteer board to bring our collective vision of an independent nonprofit to life. In 10+ years at the Wiki Education Foundation, we trained and supported 160,000+ students and faculty within higher education as they learned how to share academic knowledge with the world via Wikipedia. I worked in various roles over 13 years, most recently building a new revenue stream via a fee-for-service program. I was integral to designing and expanding the Wiki Scholars & Scientists Program, which trained subject-matter experts how to edit Wikipedia and became the organization’s second major operational program. Through this process, I've worked with experts across disciplines, often learning about their subject matter in order to design boutique programs and projects to achieve their goals. Over the past few years, I worked toward bringing better information about climate solutions and climate justice to Wikipedia, giving our program participants the opportunity to take climate action in a tangible way. I was proud to bring in our first climate-focused partners to do this work and am passionate about continuing down this path. I have worn many hats, from program manager, to long-term strategist, salesperson, marketer, fundraiser, and storyteller.

In this role, I have developed and maintained relationships with academic associations, institutions of higher education, museums, other nonprofits, and corporations. I developed a new revenue stream for an organization that previously relied on grant-making foundations and individual donations. Through my efforts, I designed services that we were able to sell to partners to help them achieve their goals—usually of public dissemination of academic research. As mostly a team of one, I've developed expertise in marketing and storytelling, business development, and inspiring others to become a part of our mission to educate the world through free and open knowledge. * See my communications work: http://wikiedu.org/jami-mathewson Show less

    Program Manager
Wiki Education Foundation Nov 2013 - Jul 2014

I coordinated the Wikipedia Education Program in the United States and Canada. In this role, I worked with professors who use Wikipedia as a teaching tool in the classroom by assigning students to edit as a part of coursework. I recruited, trained, coordinated, and mentored professors, volunteers, and students who participated in the program, and I helped build systems to scale the program from working with 20 university courses each semeseter to the 400+ today.

In my free time while I sheltered in place, I was making and selling face masks. $5 from each purchase went directly to organizations fighting for Black lives and reproductive autonomy. Since most people began switching to N95 masks, I've mostly focused on making clothing for babies, toddlers, and women.jamisewsthings.com

I manage our program in the US and Canada, which means I get the opportunity every day to work with our committed and amazing volunteers—university professors, Wikipedia editors, undergraduate students, and others who care deeply about lifelong learning and the importance of sharing knowledge. In the program, professors discard the traditional research paper assignment and assign their students to turn that amazing research into Wikipedia articles for all to access. I work with professors and volunteers to design those assignments into ones that will be mutually beneficial to the student and to Wikipedia. In other words, the best assignments are the ones that allow the students to achieve key learning objectives while also producing amazing, neutral, and well-written content for Wikipedia. On my side of the program, I strive every day to be a positive leader and mentor to our volunteers, to conceptualize and implement smart strategies that will achieve our goals and focus on our priorities, and to connect people with others who will support their needs. I'm incredibly proud of the work that our student editors, professors, and volunteers are doing. I'm incredibly proud of the partnerships our program is making—with professors, universities, academic organizations, campus institutions, etc. Some examples of the work we've accomplished:* Trained volunteers who support university professors and students to have a successful experience editing Wikipedia as a part of class* Expanded our program to almost 150 universities in the United States and Canada* Worked with professors who participate over multiple semesters because they see the positive impact this program has on their students* Partnered with academic organizations who proselytize the importance of our program to their members * Founded a new non-profit to coordinate the program Show less
