About Jamison Smith
I study clouds and their interactions with the environment. With LASP and NCAR, I use a one dimensional turbulence model to drive convective motions within an atmospheric column. Within the column, our microphysics model converts aerosol particles into cloud particles. The cloud particles grow and fall. Our microphysical model could produce a more realistic cloud than the MG2 parameterization. Developing our cloud model could improve forecasts of cloud lifetime, reflectivity, and rainfall.I am an expert in the physics of water isotopologues, such as HDO. I study the sublimation kinetics of D2O and H2O-18 with optical interferometry. I create a transition state model based on the statistical mechanics and spectroscopy of water molcules in the solid and vapor phases.I extend my experience of water isotopologues into my postdoctoral work. I add isotope physics to a sectional model of cloud microphysics embedded inside a large eddy simulation. Thus, I simulate the field of HDO produced by thunderstorms.I also collaborate in the field to measure ice particles using the WB-57 during the NASA CRYSTAL/FACE field campaign.
