The understanding of science is critical to our daily lives. Yet, too many people shun science or willingly misrepresent it. Most of my career has been spent communicating with the general public, either as a daily newspaper reporter or, fairly recently, as the public affairs officer for a US government science agency. I have more than 35 years of media experience, both as a member of the press and working with news organizations as an association and government (state and federal) spokeswoman.
