Having always loved the outdoors I studied environmental management, majoring in ecology at UEA and Stirling. I papered my walls with job applications to the NRA and joined as a conservation and recreation officer officer in 1989. I spent ten years wading through the under-rated rivers and wetlands of Kent, Sussex and Hampshire. I was FIsheries, Ecology and Recreation Manager when I left in 2000 to join the Countryside Agency. The thought of designating two new National Parks - the New Forest and the South Downs was too good an opportunity to miss. By 2006 I had added AONBs, Community Renewables, Inheritance Tax, Transport, Planning and the Coast to my National Policy portfolio. For a short while I interferred in National Trails, Discovering Lost Ways, Country Parks and the Diversity Review. I worked for Natural England in London and will always have soft spot for the capital's green places but was lured away by the thought of working back in my beloved South Downs. In 2010 I joined the National Trust and here I am looking after the most amazing spots in the Downs and leading a team of passionate and committed people along with their dogs, cattle, sheep and pigs. Who could ask for more?
