I am the author of Sounds Like Misophonia: How to stop small noises from causing extreme reactions (Bloomsbury, 2023).I am a clinical psychologist researching why some people experience intense reactions to certain sounds. Misophonia is when repetitive sounds like eating, sniffing and repetitive tapping or rustling sounds can cause a strong emotional reaction like anger, anxiety or intense disgust, making you feel trapped and like you need to get away from the sound. Many people with misophonia thought they were alone in their reactions, but it's surprisingly common, with nearly one in five of us experiencing the phenomenon. For some people, misophonia has a significant impact on daily life, interfering with work, study, relationships and mental health. My research is about trying to understand what contributes to these extreme reactions and testing whether any techniques can help reduce the intensity of reactions.Along with Dr Silia Vitoratou, I co-authored the S-Five, the world’s first valid and reliable questionnaire that captures the complexity of the misophonia experience. It captures five aspects of misophonia, has been translated into several languages and is suitable for use in research and therapy settings.
