About Jane Harris

Dr Jane Harris is Director of Research and Innovation (Stratford), and Professor of Digital Design and Innovation. With over twenty years of experience as a research leader and mentor, Professor Harris has worked extensively across the UK and international HE sector, including as Visiting Professor of Design Research, Geneva University of Art & Design (HEAD). Her current role encompasses leadership of research and development partnerships aligned to the new UAL London College of Fashion campus (2023) in Stratford, as part of the ambitious East Bank project on the Queen Elizabeth Park. Initiatives to date include co-founding the Global Disability Innovation Hub, and leading on high value research funding awards with East Bank partners UCL, Loughborough University, QMUL V&A, Sadler’s Wells, Studio Wayne McGregor, wider UK industry and academic partners. Director of one of nine UK wide Creative R&D Partnerships, as part of an £80million Creative Industries Cluster Programme (2018-23), funded by the Industrial Strategy and delivered by the AHRC, Jane is an experienced PI on UK Research Council awards, and has received Fellowships from the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts (NESTA), the Arts Foundation, and awards from the Arts Council of England, the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation and Channel4. An Advisor and Peer Reviewer to the European Commission for ICT (FP7 & Horizon 2020), Jane is a member of the AHRC Peer Review College, and has advised the EPSRC, the Arts Councils of England (ACE) and Scotland, Wellcome Trust, and the Crafts Council. A Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA), Jane is also an advisory board member of the V&A Research Institute (VARI). Her transdisciplinary research examines the application of tacit material knowledge as a means of advancing emerging computer graphic imaging (CGI) contexts. She has progressed a novel field of practice in 3D CGI animation and real-time textiles resulting in: advanced design and presentation paradigms pertaining to future fashion; methods to examine, interpret and experience contemporary and historical textiles and dress; development of digital imaging narratives; review of craft skill and the value of tacit knowledge in novel imaging, 3D and interactive technology contexts.     This role included delivery of the Faculty Design Research strategy subsequent to RAE 2008 recommendations, preparation and authoring of the REF 2014 submission (Design component). 72% of the Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory outputs Kingston submitted were considered world leading and internationally excellent. One of the best performing Unit submissions at Kingston University, this contributed to the University's overall research ranking rising from 91 (RAE 2008) to 72 (REF 2014).The role also included implementation of the design research culture and related support; staff mentoring and development of research funding applications; resource development and management; external income generation and design research facing enterprise initiatives; development of national and international academic and industry partnerships; strategic growth of design and transdisciplinary research student culture, supervision and research specific industry placements. I also assisted delivery of an AHRC PhD research skills initiative with UAL, RCA & Kingston Uni, resulting in the AHRC funded PhD consortia, the London Doctoral Design Centre (LDOC).
