I am the Washington Bureau Chief for States Newsroom, a network of state-based non-profit news organizations that cover state policy and politics. All stories are free to republish and there is no paywall. In my job, I direct national coverage, including that of Congress, the White House, executive agencies and the Supreme Court; manage a team of four staff writers and a deputy; work with the Iowa Capital Dispatch; collaborate with States Newsroom editors across the country; and coordinate with national editors and States Newsroom headquarters leaders on editorial policy, best editing practices and projects. I edited the daily Morning Education newsletter as well as the Budget and Appropriations Brief and also assigned and edited spot and enterprise coverage for six reporters across two teams.

I was the policy editor in charge of a team of reporters covering the federal budget, economic issues and appropriations at CQ Roll Call. That included editing spot and enterprise stories for the daily digital news site as well as CQ Weekly magazine. I also hosted a weekly podcast on the budget carried on NPR One.

I was the policy editor in charge of coverage of energy, the environment, immigration, legal affairs, intelligence and technology at CQ Roll Call, an Economist Group publication. I also edited special briefing papers on homeland security and border control and conceived and edited cover story packages and other articles for CQ Weekly magazine.

I served as the policy editor for health care and agriculture coverage at CQ, managing a staff of eight editors and reporters.

I wrote and edited stories about health policy and politics at CQ. Primarily I worked for CQ HealthBeat, which featured same-day digital coverage of health news in Washington. I covered the Affordable Care Act from inception to arguments at the Supreme Court to the rulings.

I worked for 20 years as a member of the Register's Washington bureau. I covered members of the Iowa congressional delegation; state and national politics, including Washington coverage of Iowa's first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses; and issues important to Iowa readers. I also wrote a weekly political column titled Potomac Fever.

I started out covering east-side neighborhoods and suburbs and was progressively promoted to the Des Moines City Hall and Iowa Legislature beats. I was part of a team assigned to Iowa's first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses.

I worked for the Des Moines Tribune, an afternoon newspaper with circulation mainly in the Des Moines metro area.
