About Jane Sylvester
I am an Assistant Professor of Musicology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. I completed my PhD in Musicology at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, and I also hold a Graduate Certificate in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies from the Susan B. Anthony Institute at the University of Rochester. In my published work and ongoing research, I investigate aspects of Italian opera during the long nineteenth century, with specific emphases on issues of materiality and embodiment in music, as well as the intersections of musical and scientific practices. My articles with the Cambridge Opera Journal (Cambridge UP) and Opera Quarterly (Oxford UP) offer new ways to theorize the intersections between opera and emerging theories of the expressive body during the verismo era. A book chapter drawn from my research about Puccini’s Italian and international reception is in the edited volume Puccini in Context (Cambridge UP). Committed to engaging with public audiences, I have recently collaborated with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the Liceu Opera Barcelona, and the Detroit Opera Theatre to compose articles and give lectures for their seasons ranging from 2021 to the present. I have presented my research at national and international conferences including meetings with the American Musicological Society (AMS) and the Transnational Opera Studies Conferences, among others. My research has recently been supported by my university, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the AMS, and the Presser Foundation. I have taught in K-12 educational settings, in both private and public schools, and have worked as a Music Learning Theory instructor of early childhood music. Additionally, I have performed as a saxophonist for 20+ years.
Listed skills include Music Education, Musicology, Music Performance, Music History, and 4 others.

Graduate Student And Instructor
In Fall 2019, I designed and taught a second iteration of an undergraduate course on classical and romantic music, entitled "Musical Bodies from Pergolesi to Puccini."
