I chaired Board at a time of enormous organisational development at C&CCC, with the introduction of new governance, new culture and new services as our major investment programme brought world-leading digitised cheque processing to this UK payments organisation. Midway through this development we responded to regulators' direction to merge into NPSO Ltd (now Pay.UK). Managing these competing strategic priorities while ensuring that end-user and stakeholder benefits were protected was challenging and accomplished by ensuring good governance was observed and regulatory stakeholders kept engaged.The move to a centralised processing system removed barriers to entry so that the number of banks participating directly in the exchange doubled in just a few months, offering overnight cheque clearing services to a broader range of consumers and business customers.I participated in the Delivery Group established by the Bank of England and the Payments Systems Regulator to shape the plans to achieve the merger of payment schemes, including securing CMA approval.

Developed the BRC's relations with the UK and EU Parliaments, Northern Ireland and Welsh Assemblies, the EU Commission, the Welsh Assembly Government and Northern Ireland Executive to be more effective in securing policy wins for members. Understanding the political and public policy dimensions within and between these key stakeholders, carefully planned strategy and communications on both commercial needs and corporate responsibilities was key.

As Climate Change Leader I established and led the strategic cross-disciplinary team investigating the impacts of financial services' practice on climate change, and those of climate risks on the sustainability of financial services.Simultaneously led the team dealing with public policy issues relating to property, creditor, travel, pet and other specialist insurances. These included sustainability issues such as climate change and flooding, crime and social and financial exclusion, discrimination, fire and arson, terrorism, and civil contingency planning. Successful initiatives included a joint agreement with government on flood protection measures, introduction of risk-based land use planning measures, launch of the ClimateWise industry initiative, reform of the GB terrorism insurance system.

Joined the new Board as the FPA floated off from the Loss Prevention Council and faced the withdrawal of insurer funding, moving to full commercial independence. Having recently left the Civil Service I built on my public sector ethos, training in governance, and financial skills to take on this private sector role. Served on the Finance and Audit, and Remuneration sub-committees. The business was completely re-structured, re-focused and re-located during this period.
