Morpeth

I am the Manager for the largest section of Northumberland Adult Learning Service. The section covers English, Maths, Employability and Family Learning. The section covers Functional English and Functional maths, we deliver employability courses for the unemployed as well as the 16-19 age group. The Family Learning Team go out to help parents and children with their English and maths. I work with other organisations to develop good business opportunities including Children's Centres, Job Centre Plus and Work Programmes. I have eight people who report directly to me and over see 40 tutors. I manage the budget for all the sections plus manage and analysis the perfomance data to ensure the section is on target.

I became part of the Employer Engagement & Marketing team last summer and have gained experience in recruiting apprentices and encouraging people to improve their own qualifications either through NVQs or academic qualifications. I have gained confidence in talking to people about qualifications and selling our company.

Whatever It Takes Project Manager Northumberland Adult Learning Service - September 2008 to PresentEmployed to manage and deliver and innovative ESF funded project, I design and implement a range of community and teaching initiatives for young people to re-engage them in learning and work. I plan, and manage teaching and support programmes and community events, to successfully improve young people’s skills, motivations and outlook. I deploy a range of recruit strategies to enrol learners on programmes which incorporate core skills like Literacy, Numeracy and personal learning and thinking skills. I aid them to secure places in formal learning (e.g., in Colleges) or to gain work through paid employment or Apprenticeships. In addition to the face to face work with young people and partner organisations, I set and manage the budget for our direct delivery and sub contractors, I co-ordinate the learner records and grant returns, and I carry out effective evaluation of the project to inform the future developments of the programme. I am proactive in working with local groups throughout the target communities in order to reach those most difficult to work with young people. My key achievements have been to achieve all project targets to date: working with over 150 young people of which most have secured a positive outcome. I have secured two years of funding to continue and develop the project, and have integrated the project into the wider organisation and have developed the recruitment practices for Apprenticeships. to help them to secure funding for their activities and community facilities. I undertook development work to help long term unemployed people to establish their own “ethical” and “green” businesses.

Blyth

Employed as a specialist teacher of Literacy and Numeracy, I devised individualised programmes to build skills to enable learners to progress from entry level to higher level learning. I led on developing schemes of work and lesson plans and co-ordinated learning programmes to meet individual learning needs and their personal development requirements. I taught learners in both group and on to one situations, encouraging and motivating them at all times. I facilitated learner placements and work experience, conducting risk assessments and health and safety vetting where relevant. I conducted monthly reviews, which required liaison with other stakeholders involved in the learner’s wider care / support plan e.g. Connexions, Youth Offending Team, Social Services, Drug Action Teams. I was the Subject Learning Coach for the team and as such led on mentoring and coaching new staff and developing the skills of the existing workforce to improve performance. It was typical in this role to deal with very challenging learner behaviour, to tackle non attendance, to managing safeguarding risks and incidents, and providing coaching / counselling to learners in distress. I periodically undertook Observations of Teaching and Learning. A key achievement in this role was delivering functional skills through the national pilot stage. I then rolled out good practice training in functional skills delivery to other providers in the sector.
