I am a first-generation college graduate with strong communication, organizational, and writing skills, while having the ability to develop new skills quickly and efficiently. What does it mean to be a first-generation college graduate? Being a first-generation child, I believe, is a means to be a quick/self-learner, an expert administrative assistant, and multitasker from a young age. From filling out my school enrollment applications at the age of 4 to filing my parents’ taxes at the age of 13, there is no doubt that I had to mature faster and carry out the responsibilities that only me, their "constantly getting in trouble for talking in class," yet, reliable daughter, can do. Therefore, I believe I must speak on my experiences outside of my work and school experience that you see below. Some responsibilities I have had as a first-generation daughter, are: Scheduling appointments, communicating with insurance companies regarding claims or benefits, property management, i.e., drafting and filing leases, addressing lessees' concerns promptly, filing unemployment, Medicare, Social Security, retirement, finding and securing my immigrant mother, with less than a high-school education, a job. Without my multitasking, time management, organizational, and communication skills, I wouldn't have been able to be the best employee, student-athlete, daughter, that I could be. Google Calendar is my best friend, and I am not ashamed to say it!
