Independent contractor since 2009 combining interim management, consultancy and training.Example interim management contract: Communications Account Manager (Interim) for KCC. This six-month role supported the recent re-structure, preparing the way for a change in the way external communications is delivered.With a strong focus on relationship management, the role covered all of KCC's services and was a mix of offering strategic advice and guidance, with hands-on practical project management work. Examples: Developed strategic plans with services, such as the Communications Plan for The Growth and Infrastructure Framework. Also worked with services to develop communications strategies to support funding bids such as the HeadStart Kent bid for Big Lottery funding of £10 million. Areas of significant change included advising services about bringing traded products to market. Previous Interim management roles involved being the lead communications professional within an organisation, reporting to the Chief Executive, or a board member. This meant working with leadership teams to define outcomes and then lead the change. Examples are given below.

West Sussex

CONTRACT Reported to the Chief Executive - responsible for managing the communications team of six during a time of re-structure and transformation. • Advised the Chief Executive, the leadership team and councillors on internal and external communications. • Operational management of the team covered the following functions: media relations, social media engagement, on-line content management, in-house graphic design and print. The team provided an advisory role to services and ensured completion of work through a blend of in-house and agency services.• Led initiatives and projects around change including facilitating the group responsible for a staff-led review to improve internal communications. Also facilitated a team project (communications team) to improve the magazine for residents and reviewed key documents including Brand Guidelines.• Recruitment and staff management - Worked with HR and Directors to design and conduct the set task and interview questions for the permanent post, interviewing candidates alongside the Directors. Also recruited maternity cover for the press officer role. Developed the communications team, bringing them together around key projects, bringing the appraisals up to date, enabling team members to fully use their skills and addressing issues raised in 121’s and team meetings.

The first contract - a combination of consultancy and interim management - scoped and project managed the Efficiency Review (approved by the Board of Directors) whilst managing and developing the existing team. The review identified direct savings and efficiencies in work methods.The second contract was to fast- track recommendations made in the review, in particular to scope plans for shared services of the function and to implement measures to protect and enhance reputation. Improvements included: Efficiency - developing the team towards more generic roles, resulting in a higher level of service for the same cost. Effectiveness - improving the ability to pro- actively manage media relations and further defining brand issues, particularly for partnership working.Connection: implementing new communications for specific audiences including stakeholders; defining key communications plans with partner organisations (eg around the launch of new repairs contracts worth over 20 million); managing sensitivity in relations with newly elected Members of the council.Direct cost savings - The shared services arrangement started in November after conducting a handover in October.I was delighted to be asked to return to HFI - These two contracts (5 months and 6 months) had a 3 month gap in between where I was abroad.

Responsible for the strategic development and delivery of internal and external communications. Professional lead for 16 communications staff (direct and matrix management) and Project Manager for sensitive or high profile publications, initiatives and change programmes:• Special projects included editing key publications and acting as communications lead for The Kent Ambassadors Programme which aimed to engage leaders from community and business groups as well as representatives from sports and from the arts.•Place-Branding - KCC lead on the steering group which developed a brand for the town of Ashford giving diverse stakeholders a more unified approach. • Initiated and led the programme to improve customer focus & engagement – awarded Charter Mark for the Environment Division and gained increased customer satisfaction ratings in Highways.• Employee communication and engagement – Directed the departmental approach to cascade briefings (800 staff over multiple locations), development workshops and social events. Also led the organisation of the annual staff conference and planned and delivered communications around change and re-structure programmes.• Project managed award winning events – 1st prize at Kent County show - manned by 70 staff over 3 days. Staff spoke to over 19,000 visitors meeting specific engagement objectives.• Directed and developed staff delivering attitude and behaviour-change campaigns – including: Clean Kent, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Green Travel and Road Safety campaigns.• Led the customer focused re-development of internal and external web channels - Re- developed over 1000 web pages in six months, on a new technical platform using Microsoft CMS. • Provided internal consultancy service to elected Members and Heads of Department - developed and improved commercial plans for brands, products and services including the development of Turner Contemporary Art Gallery on the coast in Margate.

BMRB (British Market Research Bureau) which is part of the worldwide WPP Group. Walker was the brand name for consumer and employee research products. • Led our work with the marketing department of Walker Information Global Network and I was the elected European representative on the network’s Global Competitor Intelligence Team. • Developed the Marketing Strategy; to retain current customers, attract new customers, further develop products and communications materials.

Relationship development and management with tour operators and with travel agents across the South-East. Initiated and project-managed staff-training and specialist promotions.

Olau line was an AA 5 star ferry operator between the UK and Holland.• Managed our agency relationship for media buying alongside developing and delivering localised campaigns and promotions to promote this AA five star ferry service. A&P (Advertising and Promotions) budget was £800,000 with additional project based budget as agreed, for instance, for a local TV and radio campaign.• Developed and delivered promotions including organising and escorting familiarisation trips for the travel trade and press trips to locations around Holland. Consumer marketing included local offers by direct mail and TV and radio campaigns. Targeted campaigns resulted in populating mid-week sailings.• Working with different cultural expectations - shareholders and key on-board officers were German, development meetings for our annual strategic plans were in Hamburg. Promotional tactics were adapted in appreciation of different cultural approaches.
