Janet Wilson is an award-winning journalist covering environment, energy and public health issues.Currently she is senior environment reporter with The Desert Sun, and writes USA Today's weekly Climate Point newsletter. Her joint investigation with ProPublica on who exactly receives the most Colorado River water won First Place for Innovation from Scripps Howard this year, and awards from the Society for Environmental Journalists and California Newspaper Publishers Association. Earlier in her career, she was a frontline reporter on the Los Angeles Times' Pulitzer Prize winning wildfire coverage and covered air pollution and climate change on their environment team. She was awarded a Harvard Nieman fellowship for her coverage of juvenile violence in Detroit, and covered gangsters, Donald Trump and more for the New York Daily News and New York Post, She has received fellowships from Stanford University, the United Nations Foundation and University of Southern California Annenberg for coverage of environmental justice, climate change and water supply. Her freelance investigation of contaminated water endured by residents of a small city in southeast Los Angeles County spurred the California legislature to fund replacement of the entire city's water pipes.Wilson took a break from journalism to work with climate and environment scientists, engineers and public health researchers at the University of California Irvine on magazine, news feature and multimedia packages from Tijuana to Greenland. But she missed newspapers. At The Desert Sun, her probing reports on California's oil regulators garnered first place for investigations from the state's newspaper publishers, whose judges said, "Janet Wilson's ongoing reporting about California oil regulators is watchdog journalism personified." She has won numerous other awards for her features and explanatory writing, beat coverage and breaking news. She volunteers for and is past president of the Inter-Canyon League in California's Santa Ana Mountains, which is dedicated to rural community preservation and to helping neighbors prepare for and recover from wildfires, mudslides and other disasters.
