About Janice Thompson

35+ years in development, mostly at MIT in the first part of my career. Most recently I spearheaded a nonprofit called Harpswell News to relaunch the Harpswell Anchor, a beloved local monthly newspaper that closed its doors in the fall of 2020. I bring in the revenue ($385K/year from donations, sponsorships and grants) and run the business side of the operation: budgeting, planning, liaison with the community, etc. Another recent project: I just published an historical novel called Dry Tinder: A Tale of Rivalry and Injustice in Salem Village. It's based on the true story of three sisters unjustly accused of witchcraft in Salem 1692. It can be purchased on amazon: https://tinyurl.com/3ejv2jum. While living in MA I served as Director of Advancement at The Meadowbrook School of Weston, a K-8 independent school. 4 direct reports; oversaw fundraising, events, alumni, grandparent relations, communications/marketing, parent relations. $1.5+M Annual Fund and $1-2M endowment each year. Raised $12M in the quiet phase of $35M capital campaign. Largest gift raised: $5 million. 2006-2010: Director of Institutional Advancement at the Boston Athenaeum, a 200 year old private membership library. 8 direct reports; oversaw membership, development, marketing/communications, events functions. Increased membership/ fundraising income by 19% during the 2008-2009 recession. 1987-1996, 1998 - 2006: I worked in several positions with increasing responsibilities in the Development dept at MIT; during the Campaign for MIT (1999-2004) I managed the previously underdeveloped mid-America region, raising over $38M.1996-1998: I worked at the Kennedy School at Harvard, focusing on fellowship fundraising. I was a consultant (2002-2006) while raising young daughter; clients included MIT, New England Center for the Performing Arts, Framingham Historical Society, Bridgewater State College and The History Project. I specialize in capital campaign planning/implementation; annual fundraising and alumni relations; stewardship; cultivating and soliciting six- and seven-figure gifts; working with boards; developing new markets; messaging; marketing; and strategic planning. I have written many successful grants, proposals and marketing materials. On the administrative side I have skills in budgeting, planning, leading meetings, working with committees, personnel, etc.

Listed skills include Volunteer Management, Program Development, Stewardship, Annual Giving, and 46 others.
