About Janis Harper

Content that counts. That's what I want to contribute to the small part of the world I have the privilege of living. For all of the doom and gloom that local news is known for we also bring some of the most heartfelt and honest parts of our communities to light. The second part-- that's one of my favorites. Don't get me wrong, I love owning breaking news. Not planned event breaking news, actual you-need-to-know-about-this-it-could-impact-your-life breaking news. I've covered tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, plane crashes, the Kentucky Derby, the Iditarod and one massive earthquake. Those events have one thing in common: an incredible team working together to bring you a look at the lives of others.As much I enjoy being at the helm of a newsroom my greatest passion will always be producing (that's what makes me an excellent driver; if you're not aware a producer should always think 2-10 steps ahead, which makes a big difference in how you approach others on the road). I know, I know... we live in a digital first world. I get that and ask that of everyone in my newsroom. In my opinion the moment you lose interest in what you're doing it shows-- especially in a newsroom. The moment I knew journalism was for me was when a simple phrase was said during a high school presentation, "There's three sides to every story: yours, theirs and the truth."
