Alongside this, I monitored personnel turnover and airline start-ups daily as Airline Information's consulting and conference divisions relied on the most up-to-date database. Working alongside the Managing Partners, I also helped run their events around the world. The Youth Hostels Association (YHA) has a long history of enabling young people, school groups, families, and independent walkers and cyclists to explore England and Wales, particularly within areas of natural beauty. A registered charity, YHA is an excellent place in which to quickly gain hands-on and relevant experience within the crucial hospitality industry.YHA actively encourages its employees to move around their network of hostels to gain experience of facilities of different sizes, different types of customer, and different locations each with different needs. During the five years working for them, I worked in three different locations: Chester; Llanberis (at the foot of Mount Snowdon); and Stow-on-the-Wold. Beyond this, I had a very broad range of roles and responsibilities both day-to-day and less usual while regularly problem-solving. These day-to-day roles included front-of-house (serving and helping customers, payment handling, system processing, banking, and administration); catering (planning menus, ordering, organising rotas, and cooking); and in-room (ensuring systems were followed for maximum order and cleanliness). Most enjoyably, I was tasked with devising ways of generating more income, both from bed sales and from ancillary sources. I worked on various projects, including creating a new café; a new bar; internet facilities; really pushing group bookings; and developing links with local tourist attractions.
