About Jared Ardman

I'm currently a Senior at the University of Vermont studying environmental engineering. I'm originally from the greater Philadelphia area, but am considering moving permanently to Burlington or out West after graduation. I'm excited to be taking some courses this year that address longstanding curiosities of mine. These include:- A geo-energy class focused on shallow and deep geothermal systems, nuclear waste disposal and induced seismicity from fracking and geothermal reservoirs - A groundwater hydrology class with an emphasis on contaminant flow, modeling and pumping - A separate hydrology class focused on regional mass balances from water inflow/outflow, precipitation and storm intensity, and how humidity effects seasonal weather patterns- A renewable energy class focused on the thermodynamic processes of geothermal systems, wind turbine optimization, hydroelectric and tidal power generation- A municipal waste class with a focus on anaerobic digestors, composting, landfills and incinerationLast year I served as President of UVM's chapter of Engineers Without Borders. Over our winter break, we traveled to Arusha, Tanzania where we wrapped up a multiple year project.We installed a solar system for the LOHADA school and orphanage in their girl’s dormitory and eldest age group classrooms. This system will provide a reliable source of power at night for students to study for their secondary school exams. It also provides a needed safety feature to the girl’s dorms. While in Tanzania we also visited ECONEF, a rural orphanage with an incredibly sustainable design. The buildings are designed to maximize rainwater collection from their roofs. They produce their own biogas on site from cow waste, which they use to cook with. They also use human waste to irrigate shade crops via a sanitary septic system. I am grateful for this wonderful opportunity I’ve had to see what international development projects look like.
