About Jared Keith

I have been lucky enough to work in many engineering fields Mechanical, Architectural, Chemical, I finally found my home in Software. My passion is identifying where companies are in the CI/CD transition, then using tools and ideas I make peoples lives easier. Codify all things and Automation in all things. Simplicity is key, building intuitive pipelines, constantly delivering code to happy confident customers. I love Engineering of all types and look forward to challenges. I was lucky to learn Elixir from a core Elixir dev Andrea Leopardi and he stated "make it work, make it performant, make it pretty, by the time your done doing that you'll have pretty quality code". I dont do much in Elixir today but this has served me well in the coding world and I share it to all who learn from me.

Listed skills include Agile Methodologies, Testing, Sql, Quality Assurance, and 52 others.

Lead Platform Engineer

Current

Minneapolis, Minnesota, Us

I have launched several platforms for Xcel Energy. A Jenkins, Sonarcube, Artifactory, Spinnaker for a greenfield Kubernetes platform, Xcel Energies first Container environment. I launched a Gitlab CICD platform that ran off of AWS EKS and used Fargate to cheaply run 10's of thousands of jobs for less than 30 dollars a month. I launched a 2nd container platform that uses Argocd, Helm, Helmfile, Kaniko Crossplane, Cert Manager, External DNS, Kubed. This platform fully automates Container platforming. Along this long road I have automated 100's of pipelines for a vast array of technologies. I have taught SRE skills from agents on clusters exporting metrics to synthetics constantly querying health of apps and dashboards to capture the data. I have brought in load testing frameworks, testing frameworks and converted old flaky frameworks to modern container solutions. AI is changing the way platform engineers work and I have fully embraced all the facets of how it accelerates me. I have demo'd value weekly to large groups, and have given conference talks at large cloud events. I have had a blog published by AWS about some of my fargate setups. I have lead teams small and large, and have elevated all whole interact with me. I feel I have pushed for several teams members to move up and beyond their traditional skill sets. Working with apprentices, mid level, senior, lead, director, vp level folks I defined roadmaps that transform the way business is done. Xcel Energy trusted me to set the vision and my teams have succeeded time and time again constantly receiving internal awards. The path I set forward has transformed Xcel Energy, and my teams have done this through dogged and relentless pursuit of excellence. What once was an experiment for Xcel is now just the way we do business.

We use tools(automation), methods(culture), best practices(documentation) to achieve these things.

May 2018 - Dec 2019

Build And Release Engineer

Orange County, Ca, Us

As a Build and Release engineer at Weedmaps, I maintained all Core stacks and repos. I controlled the vigorous build and deployment schedule, however my main focus was on process implementation and process evolution. I helped the team move from monolith, fragile and snowflake build and deploy flows, to a much more consistent and repeatable build and deploy flow. As Weedmaps first B&R engineer I had many things to implement such as; Release schedules, Branching and Merging methods, formal cut lines, Environments used and deployed to, defining CI/CD pipelines, internal/external comm's, testing methodology, Monitoring, Service level Indicators, Performance testing, build tooling, and that's a short list. I took them from loose standards and many methods, to a consolidated and portable build and deploy workflow. By making a portable build and deploy system we eliminate the need for build and release engineers and allow Weedmaps to scale with as many repos as they would like.

Jun 2016 - May 2018

Software Release Engineer

Pittsburgh, Pa, Us

I helped refine the company's CI/CD processes. I believe release engineering is all about adhering to as simple and coherent a process as possible. I started with process documentation. Having the necessary documentation makes audits a breeze. ULS is in the financial sector so passing audits are crucial to keeping the entire company in business. The documents I created were a very central focus of these audits. Next I moved to the SDLC process inserting check points into the Dev, RM, QA and PM Fields. I then moved to versioning methods to maintain proper versions on all of our apps, frontend and backend. This helps to deploy any setup of code ULS desired with no doubts of what we're deploying. I implemented automated build and deployments using TFS release management suite in conjunction with custom PowerShell scripts. This helped with the volume of releases, deploying multiple applications every day to several environments. This in turn locks down the release process so we know what's being released and we eliminate human error, no more sshing onto servers to manually deploy. I helped the team transition to TFS; this will helped with the source control management and with the automated build/deployment process.

Quality Assurance Engineer

Lakewood, Co, Us

I was a QA Engineer for 24tru working full time on their qualitative research platform. I enjoyed helping them transition fully into Agile. I'm also refined their SDLC by Implementing QA processes to protect the code pipeline.• I used Linux SSH/PUTTY to set up testing environments. I helped set up Rspec and CircleCI for continuous integration testing hooked through GIT. This helped get some of the manual QA process slimmed down on the front end and the continuous integration on the backend kept the build process honest and visible.• Set up Testing Architecture and move them from Gdocs to Test Rail which has made creating test metrics, linking defects to failed cases, spotting gaps in test coverage and running regression testing much more manageable. This was a huge effort and an important one as we released software every week. I have brought in some nice process docs like: test plans, test case templates and defect entry guidelines. • Refine their Agile process by defining teams and sprint life cycles. I worked with their product team to get formal product design meetings that included the dev team. This creates a better built product/feature, as full team has say in the initial design. With the product team I defined formal acceptance process for them on production ready features in demos, creating an extra layer of assurance that our feature is what our product team actually envisioned.
