I am a journeyman HVAC technician servicing commercial systems including VRF systems, boilers & burners, air and water cooled chillers, hydronic heating and cooling systems, self contained and split refrigeration systems, building controls, and split and packaged HVAC units. I work with customers to provide value in the forms of comfort, reliability, and a general peace of mind that their equipment is in good hands. I believe a critical portion of the role of the commercial HVAC technician is to communicate technical information in a clear and concise way to the customer so that they can make sound, fully informed decisions about their systems.

After working for roughly a year as project manager/estimator, I decided to pursue the more technical side of the industry and transitioned to the service department at CM3. I assisted and shadowed other technicians for some time before moving into a truck and running service calls. This position has allowed me to develop my technical understanding and troubleshooting abilities for various types of commercial systems. The equipment I have performed maintenance and repairs on include: rooftop units, small and large split systems, dedicated outside air and makeup air units, industrial process and comfort cooling chillers, water towers, hydronics pumps and systems, heat pumps, LG and Mitsubishi VRF systems, walk-in freezers and coolers, and small self contained refrigeration units.I also assist with estimation for service repairs and replacements and generate quotes and proposals for customers.

During this time I estimated for bids on commercial HVAC and plumbing projects. I was also the HVAC project manager for several commercial projects. My responsibilities included takeoff of piping, duct and equipment and working with suppliers and subcontractors to compile accurate and competitive bids, as well as management of HVAC projects from the pre-construction stage to project closeout. This included scheduling, coordination and collaboration with field personnel, subs, suppliers and general contractors. I enjoyed this work but found myself wanting to get deeper into the technical parts of the trade.

I began working in the mechanical contracting industry right after graduating from high school as a sheet metal installer for commercial HVAC projects. I worked through each summer and winter break in this capacity while attending Kansas State University. At times I also assisted on the plumbing/piping side of the business. I became familiar with the sequence and coordination of commercial construction projects, and learned about the installation and operation of the various types of HVAC systems. After graduating university I worked as a field engineer, coordinating HVAC and plumbing systems with the other trades on site, generating shop drawings for construction, and working with the foremen and project managers to develop plans and schedules for the work.
