Responsible for building a drug discovery platform to identify novel modulators of the microbiome for the prevention and treatment of disease

• Led diverse 40 person group including 16 Ph.D. level scientists with responsibility for all aspects of discovery biology in antibacterials and pain, including target identification, assay development/validation, low-to-medium throughput screening (including natural products), routine testing of early stage leads in whole cell and enzymatic assays, detailed characterization of advanced compounds including mechanism of action and mechanism of resistance, and efficacy testing in a variety of small animal models. Team was also responsible for biology support of clinical and commercial stage compounds, including protocol development, trial data analysis and preparation of regulatory filings.• Led transition of Cubist Biology team from strict focus on antibacterial discovery to diverse portfolio including pain and other human diseases. Created Human Diseases department to support new therapeutic areas including capabilities in ion channels and GPCRs. Broadened Pharmacology capabilities to include animal models of pain and other diseases.• Responsible for multiple projects contributing to overall culture of Cubist research program. Created “25% Solution” initiative to improve efficiency of resource utilization and project decision making. Lead efforts to improve project team effectiveness, including training of Project Team Leaders (PTLs), definition of PTL and project team member roles, and revamp of quarterly project review process to maximize effectiveness for project teams. Led efforts to improve innovation culture within DNCD, including creation of highly successful “InVenture” internal venture capital competition.• Biology lead for discovery of CB-183,315 (Surotomycin), currently in Phase 3 studies for treatment of C. difficile. Contributed, as core team member or departmental head to three other INDs and two development candidates since 2008.
