For six years, planned and taught English and film courses in grades 9-12 at Thomas A. Edison High School in Alexandria, VA. Aligned course content, lesson plans and assessments with International Baccalaureate (IB) objectives, state Standards of Learning (SOLs) and county Program of Study benchmarks. Worked closely with students at both regular and advanced levels. Co-wrote and implemented individualized educational plans (IEPs) for special-needs students.In collaboration with fellow teachers and the school’s IB Coordinator, developed and implemented an advanced, college-preparatory curriculum in English, rooted in the development of independent critical analysis. Selected multicultural texts, designed program-wide end-of-course testing and conducted individual oral testing sessions for up to 150 seniors. Trained in IB English curriculum development at United World College, Montezuma, NM.Created a comprehensive, two-year IB Film program of study encompassing film history, theory, critical analysis and the techniques and logistics of film production. Trained in IB Film curriculum development at IB headquarters in Cardiff, Wales.Served as Cooperating Teacher to a full-time, postgraduate teaching intern. Oversaw the student teacher’s professional development and field experiences during a yearlong internship. Monitored lesson planning and performance during a six-week solo teaching period, and coordinated final evaluation with GWU graduate program advisor.
