About Jared Young

Hi, I'm Jared! I am currently working as an Instructor for Sayers Croft Field Centre, UK, which involves me delivering sessions to children of primary school age, but it also can include secondary school children and adults as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. I teach a wide range of sessions, from academic environmental studies (such as river studies, pond dipping, bug hunting, tree orienteering and compass orienteering), to more nature based exploration (for instance natural art, guided hikes through the local forests, streamwalk and shelter building), to adventure based sessions (for example archery, axe throwing, woodland ropes course, team based challenge course). Sayers Croft has a expansive list of sessions which I am trained to run, and everyday brings new exciting challenges with the opportunity for me to deliver quality sessions which are adapted to the participants needs. I am also significantly involved in the European Geography Association (EGEA), which has allowed me to travel Europe to learn about the rich history and culture of many European countries from citizens of those countries, while also giving me the opportunity to invite them to the UK and do the same. I founded my own entity in North Wales to join the organisation (EGEA Bangor) in 2018, then progressed on to help lead the Western Regional Team as a Regional Assistant in 2021/22, followed by becoming the Secretary on the Board in 2022/23. I am excited to continue volunteering my within the organisation now, as I am keenly interested in maintaining my connection to mainland Europe, as well as trying to expand the organisations reach within the UK itself to offer other the same fantastic opportunity to students across the country starting in the Surrey area.

Working as the Secretary my responsibilities include:-- Writing and publishing of minutes from our board meetings and strategy meetings-- Writing the Half Year and Annual Report regarding EGEA's structure, progress and goals including within them the Financial Report of EGEA and Policy Paper review-- Managing the organisations official email address-- Managing the Regional Teams across EGEA's four regions: West (27 entities), East (24 entities), EuroMed (13 entities), and North & Baltic (9 entities) and representing the Board at official regional events-- Generally promote EGEA's aims and values, while seeking new opportunities to expand and improve its structure, organisation and horizonsProjects:Regional Restructuring-- I led a working group which restructured EGEA's administrative regions, alongside the assistance of around 10 knowledgeable EGEAn's who came from different backgrounds in EGEA with different valuable insights. Over the last decade, EGEA has had 4 regions with very a significant imbalance between the number of entities in each which has caused administrative issues such as not being able to fill official regional positions or find willing entities able to host regional congresses. Smaller regions are the most impacted by this, with the largest difference being between West and North & Baltic (18 entities difference). Our working group spent a year (Sept 2022 - Sept 2023) considering the possible solutions to this, but opted change to 3 regions, and rebalance the number of entities per region to help spread the responsibilities mentioned across more entities and individuals. This change was approved by the General Assembly this year at the Annual Congress in Weißenbach, Attersee (Austria).Appendix H - War and Conflict Guidelines-- Due to the invasion of Ukraine and subsequent war since February 2022, I assisted in creating guidance for EGEA to protect its members and itself from the being impacted by this tragic and horrible situation.

Regrettably cancelled due to Covid-19, should have run between March and September 2020, I was there for just over a month. In my time there, I completed several lessons, with every session being enjoyable and a pleasure to help teach. Duties included setting up the areas with the relevant equipment for the lesson plans e.g. work sheets and pond dipping equipment, teaching the lesson plan and ensuring we were adaptable with the session as it developed, and finally ensuring everything was cleaned away and the reserve was tidy. This role was a pleasure to have, and I am only saddened by its unexpectedly short nature. It gave me brilliant insight into teaching in the outdoor, equipping me with activities and tasks I can use and adapt, as well as practical experience teaching and adapting to an outdoor environment
