I'm an agricultural economist specializing on animal production, especially animal health and welfare. My work focuses on improving and identifying economically sustainable production methods, technologies, policies and business arrangements in the food sector. My research is quantitatively oriented and frequently employs modelling and optimization methods. Since 2011 I'm also a Docent (Adjunct Professor) at the University of Helsinki, Department of Economics and Management. Together with collaborators at MTT and elsewhere, we have secured funding for several interdisciplinary projects supported by a number of different donors. I'm currently heavily involved in the EU's FP7 project "Sustainable intensive pig and poultry production (PROHEALTH)" and a large research-for-development programme in Sub-Saharan Africa (FOODAFRICA, www.mtt.fi/foodafrica), both having a budget of over 10 million euros. I'm also leading a work package in a large Erasmus-supported network to enhance the use of economics in animal health education, research and policy making (NEAT, www.neat-network.eu).
