'Microbial Detection in Surface Waters'I am leading a joint project with the environmental engineering and biomedical engineering departments at the University of Cincinnati. We will be designing a hydrogel worm that can propel itself in water through expansion and contraction caused by heating and cooling (in the design phase, we are using a laser to induce these phase changes). We will then alter the surface chemistry to capture E. coli and/or other contaminants. We will put an internal device in the capable of being the heating and cooling mechanism and also transmitting contaminant data. This will improve upon our ability to detect and track E. coli pollution in water. The presence of E. coli is usually indicative of wider water quality concerns.I completed phase I of the project in August 2013. Phase I was to prove that peristaltic motion was a capable mechanism for movement in free-floating environments, expanding the situations in which peristaltic locomotion can be employed by soft robots (beyond traditional frictional environments).Gregory, Jarod, et al. Journal of Applied Polymer Science (2014).I completed phase II of this project, which was functionalizing the hydrogels with the ability to capture E. coli cells, in March 2014. Our team presented our work in extracting fatty acids from trap grease for biodiesel production at the 2012 EPA National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington, D.C. At the expo, we competed against over 40 other university research groups for a P3 Award and $90,000 research grant.
