During this time, I completed the back-end program at the Turing School of Software & Design. I utilized Ruby on Rails to exceed the requirements of over 10 given projects. Through analyzing the end product, I developed a plan with benchmarks, found, read, and implemented documentation, and communicated effectively with collaborators, leading to a grade of 'exceeds expectations' in over 80% of my projects.

In this role, I mentored and coached 40 special education teachers on instructional techniques, behavior management, lesson planning, and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) development. It was through open communication and partnership that I maintained strong relationships with mentees and helped bridge the gap between what they were learning in their college courses to what was happening in their classrooms.A large aspect of this role was developing curriculum for incoming special education teachers, J1 teachers from abroad as well as alternative route teachers in Las Vegas. By using my strengths, specifically, my attention to detail and my ability to break down large concepts into easy-to-understand chunks, I was able to work with the team to revamp the curriculum, creating meaningful asynchronous components as well as delivering high-quality synchronous lessons. In doing this, we prepared our teachers for success in the classroom.

As a resource teacher, I combined my strong work ethic and passion for helping others to create meaningful learning experiences for my students. I researched and utilized technology to create materials that allowed my students to access and produce grade-level materials. Additionally, I cultivated a learning environment that focused on social-emotional learning, incorporating a circle-up time each Friday as well as a student-nominated classroom roaming trophy that highlighted the development of a growth mindset within my students.A major part of my job as a case manager to my students was to collect and analyze data, keeping up-to-date documentation based on individual student goals. In an audit from the state, I received a 99% accuracy rate on my Individualized Education Plan (IEP). At my school, I also pioneered utilizing technology to collect student data, which allowed for more effective data collection and synthesis.Another focus within my time in the classroom was taking difficult and complex concepts, breaking them down into their component parts, sequencing them, and effectively teaching them in an order that made sense. Utilizing this skill, my classroom's average standardized test scores increased by over 5%.

I entered the realm of special education through Teach for America. I chose this organization because their mission of working to ensure that every child receives an excellent and equitable education aligns with my core values. While I didn't have a background in education, through an intensive 6-week course, I entered and ran my very own classroom at the beginning of the school year in 2012. While also obtaining my Master's in special education, I was able to apply what I was learning in class at night to my practices in the classroom, which translated to better learning opportunities for my students.
