This role required the undertaking of an academic literature review to inform the survey design of a Poll involving administration of survey questions direct to children for the purpose of evaluating their mental health and wellbeing in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.The RCH Child Health Poll focuses on issues relating to the health and wellbeing of children and teenagers in Australia. The findings of each Poll are used to help promote better understanding of the experiences and priorities of the Australian community on child health issues.

This role involved me working as a research assistant on part B of a 5-year-long research project intended to prevent the significant mental health morbidity load of depression, anxiety problems and suicidality experienced by children living in adversity and exposed to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). My role was associated with the evaluation of an integrated Child and Family Hub model of care for families with children from birth to 8 years living with adversity in a local government area of Melbourne. The role of Child and Family Hub Research Assistant specifically focused on assisting the recruitment of approximately 200 families with children 0-8 years for an evaluation of the integrated Child and Family Hub model. This involved approaching families/ caregivers to participate in the study in the waiting rooms of a health services clinic in outer metro Melbourne. This role also required responsibility for administering surveys to families both in person and over the phone over the duration of the recruitment period using the research software tool RedCap.

This role involved me contacting approximately 500 families with children in Grades 1, 2 and 3, across 12 participating Victorian metro and regional primary schools to participate in a pilot randomised control trial of a school-based intervention. My responsibilities included calling families over the phone to explain the study, ensure their eligibility and support access to the online consent form and study survey, using the research software tool RedCap. This role required me to utilise excellent interpersonal ability when communicating with parents over the phone, and to utilise judicious time management, organisational and analytical problem-solving skills to accomplish the recruitment objectives within the given timeframe, working largely independently.

This internship with the MCRI's Centre of Research Excellence in Childhood Adversity and Mental Health involved me conducting a secondary analysis of previously collected qualitative data regarding barriers and enablers to the implementation of an intervention model being trialled in an outer metropolitan area of Melbourne Victoria, for detecting and responding to children aged 0-8 years and their families living with adversity and at risk of poor mental health outcomes. The project was informed by the field of implementation science, with an aim to consolidate and orientate the data within the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) conceptual framework. By collating and consolidating the available data into the CFIR domains, my completed project will be used to assist in the co-design and implementation processes for the intervention model’s pilot trial implementation.
