I almost cried when I opened the email. After 20 years in the restaurant business, I was finally hanging it up, getting a “real job”. I had asked a good friend to review my resume. I thought for years that working in bars and restaurants did not qualify as a real job. That is what we are told. By the family members who expect more. By the friends that think we are not ‘applying’ ourselves. After a while, you start to believe it. I know I did. I could not fathom that I had something to offer in the ‘real world’. I was scared and embarrassed. The email came with the revisions to my resume. I was overcome with emotion. For the first time, I felt that I did have something to offer. That my time had not been ‘wasted’. That I had tangible skills that had value out there. That there was hope for me yet. In the 3 years since that day, I have successfully moved into a more ‘traditional’ job. I have used my skills in people management, creative problem-solving, and my natural curiosity to continue to solve problems and make things better for my clients and my company. In addition to using Excel to track and analyze my golf statistics, I now use it to improve efficiency and analyze the operation. I use the listening and communication skills I honed behind the bar to really understand what people, my clients, and my team, want and need. I feel comfortable juggling multiple tasks because, frankly, I will never feel pressure like having to change a keg during Friday happy hour while figuring out why the kitchen printers are down and needing to change all the TVs to the Yankees game!
