Welcome to Dauntless Maritime. Mostly this is just me, Jason. Sometimes I have a crew and sometimes part of a crew. It doesn't really matter to me. I come from three generations in the PNW maritime industries. I am not a seeker of position, fortune, or my own personal agenda or glory. I have chosen the maritime industry because it brings great challenge and rewards. It calls to me, strongly. The ocean is a force that calls to some and scares even more. Most of my career has been spent in the shadows, working behind the scenes to build vessels that transport adventurers onto the big blue. I work hard in helping owners, builders and operators with their pleasure or commercial vessel construction, re-fit or repair project. I tend to be drawn into projects that are just a little more challenging, as if anything marine was not already challenging enough (nothing more challenging than a commercial Yacht, just saying). I work with honesty, honor and humility, recognizing that I am not a master of the industry. No one is. Some will bluff and stand in front, claiming to have something no one else does. What really matters is do you have a team next to you? Behind you? Or maybe in front of you. The"what" matters less than the "who". I love what I do, even if it is just a little here and there for just a few. I work hard so that each customer and teammate will become a friend and ally in the efforts to feed the sense of determination and adventure. I am a big pusher of project planning. Anyone who knows me has seen this. Poor planning is expensive and stressful, (almost as much as greed or ego). I am always looking for other like-minded mariners who are driven to the trades that support the passion. I am always looking for a team to join or bring together for that special project, the more impossible the better. My strength is the ability to understand the production side as well as the engineering side. I am as comfortable behind a weld hood as I am two giant monitors 3D modeling a hulls shape or designing MEP systems. I am very hands on and have spent many years getting them dirty. I love every minute of it. On the other side I recognize the value of design and engineering to get it right before handing it over to be built. One cannot exist without the other and it's better if the two sides agree and get along. Keep in touch. I love a good chat about what moving, and a lot is right now...

Project Manager, Project Engineer, Marine Vessel Design, SurveyDauntless Maritime May 1991 - PresentBellingham, Washington, United StatesIn between times of direct-hire, I have worked independently to provide a variety of construction services for both marine vessels and land-based structures. This involved the set-up of two businesses.Dauntless Maritime (www.dauntlessmaritime.com) - This business was initially set up in Washington State in 2000 in an effort to take on more marine vessel specific projects, my true passion. Early on it was strictly providing design/engineering services on a contract type basis for small to medium sized local boat builders. As experience has grown, additional services have been added as follows:Project Consulting (boat owners and shipyards)Project ManagementProject EngineeringMarine SurveyorDesign & EngineeringRegulatory & Class ComplianceShipyard and Vessel Management Evaluation & TrainingCascade Design & Construction - This business was established almost immediately upon completion of my formal education. Initially, much work was done in the design and engineering of MEP systems for commercial projects as well as govt. buildings, refinery support business structures, warehouses, schools, and even complex high-end luxury homes. Over time, work has expanded to include other civil, mechanical and architectural design and engineering services including full project drawing submittal and construction packages for new construction and remodels of commercial structures and high-end luxury homes and condos. Most recently the company has taken on the role of General Contracting with a core team producing specialized projects.

Project Development EngineerRybovich 2014 - 2015West Palm Beach, Florida AreaWorked with the sales team to put together detailed and complete project proposals and project contracts, once accepted. These detailed and extensive proposals included real-world budgets, schedules and expectations that helped the client and shipyard succeed with each project. Performed numerous ship-checks on and off site to bring each project into a real-world scope of work. Worked with vessel owners, crew and management companies to align their wishes with the capabilities and economy of the yard. -
Marine Project ManagerPlatypus Marine, Inc. 2012 - 2013Port Angeles, WaWorked with the Platypus crew to bring together their first new construction project, a 58' commercial fishing boat designed to seine, trawl and pot fish. I worked directly with the client and shipyard owner to help successfully complete the build to the customers full satisfaction and in time to hit his target season in full operation. This included building a new construction production team as well as setting up a separate facility with equipment, consumable and parts stores, and small production office. As with any new project that is outside the norm, it was not without its share of hurtles and bumps. At the end of the day, the product has been a huge success and served the client very well, gaining much admiration from fellow fishermen. A challenging project indeed but one filled with great satisfaction, memories and friendships that will live on for a lifetime. -
Engineering & Manufacturing Coordinator, Regulatory/Class CoordinatorWestport Shipyard Inc. 2004 - 2011Port Angeles, WaI was initially brought to Westport to work with the manufacturing and engineering team to help them produce their first series of fully certified ABS & CISR 50M commercial yachts. This involved developing and setting up a fully compliant manufacturing QA system for a new facility as well as assuring full compliance and sign-off of design and engineer drawings. Once the 50M yacht series system was fully operational, it was decided to incorporate the same system certify a revised 40M series of yachts. Once set-up of this line of yachts was completed, my focus was shifted to work full time with the Mechanical Engineering team. Work was also done to bring all drawing systems up to full ASME Y14.5-2009 GM&T standards as well as assist the yards in developing Lean Manufacturing principles appropriate for the industry. -
Design Engineering / Project ManagerNorthern Marine 2001 - 2004Anacortes, WaHaving previously performed contract services for this shipyard, I was eventually brought in full time to work with the Design/Engineering team to perform mechanical and electrical engineering and designs for their 55-85' Long Range Trawler yacht series. I was eventually shifted over to work almost solely on the new series of 130-154' mega-yachts. Work was done to gain full ABS & CISR commercial certification of the larger yachts. I worked heavily with the Project Management and Production Management teams to provide the needed support to meet QA standards, schedules and budgets.

Journeyman Fitter/WelderDakota Creek Industries, Inc. 1997 - 2000Anacortes, WaIn an effort to get out of an office environment and gain some much needed and enjoyable hands-on production experience, I began working here as a pipe and structural fitter/welder building various new construction vessels (yachts, tugs, fishing boats, ferries, etc.) and working of many refits and repairs of steel, aluminum, FRP and wood vessels. Worked with and became well versed in many Regulatory (USCG, CISR) and Class (Lloyds, ABS, DNV) requirements for fitting, welding, mechanical and electrical systems. Performed multiple large diesel and turbine engine swaps, non-traditional propulsion system installations (Voith/Snyder, Azimuth, Hamilton Jet, etc.) and many other great marine project tasks that greatly added to my overall understanding of medium to large commercial vessels.
