About Jason Maher

My resume says counselor. But when you get right down to it, I’m much more—I’m an educator, a teacher, a workshop and seminar presenter, a community liaison, a student-success coordinator, and a technical geek (ask me anything about data, Microsoft Excel, or credit tracking software systems, seriously).I’m also a big believer in the mission of California’s community colleges.I believe that students don’t neatly fit into molds handed to them. Students don’t make decisions about their futures based on boxes they can check off. They make decisions based on their experiences.I believe that students make the best decisions when they’re moved, when they’re engaged to the point that they drop whatever it is they have planned and say, “Oh, heck yes. I want to do THAT.”And so, through empathic and culturally competent counseling, I help students discover how their skills connect to futures they never thought possible. I teach students how to communicate their experiences in ways that re-narrate their lives into alignment with their own visions and values.Specialties: college and career counseling with active duty, military affiliated, and veteran populations, first generation students, disproportionately impacted students, historically underserved students, and non-traditional students.I’m right over at jasongmaher@gmail.com if you ever want to talk careers, job search, or academic counseling.

Listed skills include Public Speaking, Student Counseling, Curriculum Development, Leadership, and 21 others.

District Head Counselor Ii - Counseling & Guidance Department

Current

I work closely with counselors to find creative solutions to make sure students graduate on time. I help 15 counselors monitor 1,100 seniors across 3 high schools to provide guidance that ensures students are programmed properly through graduation. One of the projects I'm working on is the development of an online credit check tool. I'm collaborating with a computer programmer in building an early warning system that allows counselors to identify students at the click of a button who are at risk of not graduating. This software helps counselors design relevant interventions for student success. This credit check system will eliminate the need for manual credit checks. I regularly audit the tool to calibrate and sync it so that it accurately reflects the district's academic policies. I'm also making sure that counselors can interface with the system easily and that it responds with a high level of reliability and functionality. When fully implemented, it will save 100 high school counselors between 5,000 and 5,500 hours per year from doing manual credit checks, which they can then use to deliver direct services to students.I help 2,000 students from 8 high schools take college courses through a dual enrollment program. In my work as the program coordinator for San Diego Unified School District's partnership with Mesa and City Colleges, I collaborate and communicate with college deans, high school principals, students, parents, admissions and student services staff, counselors, and instructors in developing curriculum in English, math, science, history, and political science. I monitor and review the program to ensure that students are properly registered. Most importantly, I review student outcome data for this program so that our team can make effective decisions about how to support student success by providing appropriate counseling.

High School Counselor

1060 Harrison Rd., Colorado Springs, Co 80905

I helped 28 high school students graduate with associates degrees by developing a dual enrollment program from the ground up. I worked with my building's leadership to test all freshmen with College Board's ACCUPLACER. We identified 31 students who were ready to take college level courses. I sat with every student through individual counseling. Together, we did some career exploration and I figured out their interests. From there, we articulated a course curriculum for each dual enrollment student using Guaranteed Transferrable Pathway courses between the Colorado Community College System and Colorado State University that were taught at our site through agreements I helped forge in this partnership. This all required close collaboration with college deans, my central office, and my building's administrative leadership. As the point person on this project, I also played a major role in creating the master schedule. I even coordinated a way for our high school teachers to qualify and get approved as community college adjunct faculty. We set a goal for graduating 25 students with associates degrees by 2017. I was fortunate to build a system that empowered the team to exceed our expectations.I helped teachers identify students with particular needs by developing a spreadsheet that enabled a deep analysis of data. We wanted to make sure we were offering support to students who fell into any of four federal AYP categories: special education, low-income, minority, or English Learner. This tool gave us the means to focus on key students by providing analysis of various outcome data and by revealing relevant interventions. I made it so that teachers could easily read this information and use it in their efforts helping students reach proficiency and academic success. By being extremely intentional, I simplified the data so that teachers and other end users could comprehend it and incorporate the recommended interventions in their instructional practices.
