I took up a position as an Associate at AD Hertzberg Attorneys, a medium size law firm comprising six attorneys. I dealt with litigation and insolvency work. I utilised this two year period to hone my litigation skills under the guidance of Mr. Alon Hertzberg, the senior partner. I resigned to commence practise for my own account under the name and style of Jason Michael Smith Attorneys and Conveyancers.

Whilst studying at university I was employed at First National Bank as a bank teller for a period of four years and gained a thorough understanding of the workings of a branch of a retail bank.After completing my articles of clerkship I joined the commercial division of FirstRand Bank Limited as a Commercial Recoveries Manager. I was initially responsible for the business segment where I managed the regional business portfolio consisting of five business analysts (comprising senior bankers and junior attorneys). I subsequently managed the medium corporate recoveries segment, which involved corporate entities with turnovers of R10 million to R200 million. I liaised extensively with credit managers, client portfolio executives, attorneys, liquidators, and auctioneers. I reported to both the regional and national head of the Commercial Recoveries Division. I was a member of and participated in the Internal Credit Risk Committee. I also represented the bank in banking consortia dealing with major insolvencies. I left the employ of FirstRand Bank Limited to return to the practise of law.
