About Jason Byrd

I like to joke that what I actually do at work is serve as a marriage counselor. As someone who architects large-scale change across matrixed organizations, I often uncover lots of emotions. To help manage these feelings, I take a two-pronged approach: first, I get to know people to uncover their concerns and foster trust; second, I work to help people reframe their reactions and see change as a positive thing. I believe that lending an empathetic ear to people’s concerns is not only the right thing to do, but it also produces the most efficient business outcomes. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄As a college student, I became fascinated by healthcare reform. I followed this passion to law school so that I would be positioned to influence healthcare policy. To grow my expertise in this field, throughout the 2000s I served as a policy analyst for the United Network for Organ Sharing, Associate Director of Quality Alliances for the American College of Cardiology, and the Director of Practice Management, Quality and Regulatory Affairs for the American Society of Anesthesiologists. I joined Atrium Health in 2012, where I have been progressively promoted from Director of Patient Safety to Enterprise Vice President of Integration. My work integrating 18 service lines, exceeding synergies targets 163%, and saving $180M annually by identifying efficiencies was recognized in 2022 by Atrium Health CEO Gene Woods, who awarded me with the Tree of Life Coin, Atrium’s highest honor given to 12 out of 77K teammates each year. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲My leadership is characterized by three traits: embracing change to pursue excellence, meeting others where they are to optimize collaboration, and relying on objective analysis to empower decision-making. I am a creative problem solver who is able to take a step back, look for the right answer, and determine the steps necessary to reach a goal. As a people manager, I am guided by the quote, “Be kind; everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” I know that people work best when they can be authentic about what they’re going through and have their concerns validated.𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬✔ Improved EBITDA $110M in first year of Atrium Health Navicent integration by standardizing processes and developing comprehensive integration roadmap.✔ Exceeded synergies target 163% during Wake Forest Integration.✔ Won and/or managed CMS contracts totaling $15.8M and implemented patient engagement effort recognized as top in the country by CMS.𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭: jasonrbyrd@gmail.com

I was hired to develop a plan for and drive implementation of a 3-year, $3M Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) contract across 29 hospitals. To do so, I led the Hospital Engagement Network (HEN) and Partnership for Patients collaboration. I managed 10 direct reports whose roles included clinical care, quality improvement, and data analytics.𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐔𝐋𝐓𝐒:✔ Won and/or managed 5 CMS contracts worth a combined $15.8M by developing proposals and leading implementation efforts. Three of these proposals were the direct result of my proposal writing and prior success managing CMS contracts.✔ Reduced patient harm events 40% and avoidable hospital readmissions 20% across all hospitals in 3 years. To reduce patient harm events, I identified falls experts and pressure points in each hospital among the 29 I was responsible for, then worked collaboratively to establish best practices that included virtual check-ins, signage with standardized color scheme, and special footwear. To tackle avoidable readmissions—a notoriously difficult, multifactorial problem—I mobilized community organizations to help mitigate readmission causes such as homelessness and barriers to medication access.✔ Scored above 97% for employee engagement for 4 years running. I was distinguished as a Tier 1 leader, which is the highest level possible at Atrium Health.✔ Architected an antibiotics stewardship program that resulted in 139.7K fewer days of antibiotic therapy use among patients. I worked with physicians to identify over-prescribed medicines and then fostered physician-to-physician conversations about the importance of reducing unnecessary antibiotic use.

I wrote a business plan and harnessed existing training materials that were being provided free of charge to create a new, regularly-recurring revenue stream.✔ Revitalized annual practice management conference, developing content relevant to private equity-backed national practices and inviting partners from these practices to present at modules and breakout sessions. ✔ Speaker at 50+ events, delivering expert analysis of practice management, quality, payment, and health policy issues through webinars, conferences, and grand rounds with audiences of up to 800 people.
