During my one-year placement at SG Technologies, I was involved in developing and conducting continuous improvement projects, which seek to optimise manufacturing processes, saving valuable resources and expenditure. One area I focused on in particular was the reconfiguration of the company's sintering process. Though stages of blending, recycling and experimenting with sintering consumables, I was able to propose a system which could provide a cost saving of up to £100k p.a.Another key responsibility was to introduce and implement useful control measures for newer production lines, including DC magnetic ring testing for soft-magnetic properties (ASTM A596) and micro-hardness testing. In the case of non-conformance, I would present these results in weekly meetings to the R&D team for review, where the issue would be broken down by systematic analysis to find the root cause. I would then carry out the relevant metallurgical/materials analysis, such as sectioning, mounting, polishing and etching for micrographic studies, or in certain cases - SEM/EDS analysis at the Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre (LMCC).
