About Javier Stevens
In 2011, I began my journey as a full-time special education teacher and graduate student through the New York City Teaching Fellows program. Over the course of five years at a public high school in Brooklyn, New York, I served as a lead teacher, co-teacher, and support service provider in English Language Arts and English Language Learning classrooms. These roles enhanced my ability to promote equitable learning across diverse curricula. Working within New York’s public school system, where many students were identified with behavioral disabilities, deepened my understanding of the importance of restorative teaching—approaches that prioritize the student’s environment alongside their behavior. In 2016, I sought new experiences abroad and moved to Qatar, joining Qatar Leadership Academy, an all-boys boarding program in Al Khor. Over three years, I taught students from across the Arab Gulf as an English Language Diploma Program teacher, integrating my ELL, ELA, and pastoral experience within the International Baccalaureate framework. I also contributed to the school-wide positive behavioral intervention systems (PBIS). With student-teacher ratios as low as 10:1, I regularly provided individualized academic coaching, fostering IB Approaches To Learning through mentorship. The meaningful relationships I developed at QLA solidified my decision to continue as an IB Learning Support Teacher. In 2019, I relocated to Incheon, South Korea, where I became an IB Middle Years Program educator at Chadwick International. My work with PBIS and ATL reinforced the belief that students who develop emotional awareness are more capable of demonstrating empathy. During my first year, I led two affinity groups focused on racial and queer identities, and in my second year, I co-facilitated Chadwick’s first faculty orientation dedicated to promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In 2021, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic led me back to the Americas to be closer to family. I am currently in my fourth year at Escola Americana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I serve as an MYP Learning Support Teacher and inclusion advocate. Most recently, in December 2023, I earned an Instructional Leadership Certificate through Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, aligning my professional practice with my goal of equipping students with the skills they need to foster agency and positively engage with their communities.
