Volunteer Research AssistantUniversity Of Houston Behavioral Neuroscience Lab Jun 2015 - May 2016Assisted a graduate student in a bench study concerning post-binge exercise on the rodent brain. The link involved binge administration of ethanol and the affect it sustained on memory; specifically in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. I had the opportunity of handling the rodents, recording exercise data, observing and assisting with behavioral tasks, and eventually witnessing perfusions and brain extraction. The behavioral tasks carried out were the Water Maze task and the Novel Odor Recognition task. Tissue slicing was carried out using a microtome. Thereafter, the brain slices underwent an immunohistochemistry (IHC) protocol before being stained to be examined under a lab microscope.

VolunteerThe Monarch School Oct 2015 - Apr 2016Houston, Texas AreaBeing in this empirical setting, I wanted to get insight into the behaviors concerning the autism spectrum and contribute to the core goals of self-regulation, executive function, and academic and professional competence. I helped by keeping the student remain engaged on a task, which improved their self-regulation and independence. When working on a cognitive task, the goal was to enhance their executive function through targeting working memory and critical thinking. Relationship building was another key component for the student with other peers and educators valuable in the classroom and real world. The learning methods coupled with relationship development enhanced the student’s overall competency, academically and professionally, to reach the goal of independence.

Volunteer Research AssistantUniversity Of Houston, Visual Cognition Lab Aug 2013 - May 2014Houston, Texas AreaAided in a clinical dissertation study concerning memory and attention. Duties included recruiting and screening participants, scheduling appointments, running study sessions, and organizing and performing data entry. Two main conditions of the study involved that involved: 1) A working memory task that varied by color and spatial locations 2) A visual search task where a target was to be identified amongst distractors. The results of each task indicated that a selective maintenance in spatial working memory required sustained attention.
