Corporate Assistant Operations Manager, 1991-1993Gained “hands-on” experience in all facets of recycling operations including direct responsibility for purchase of scrap metal (emphasis on railroad-related scrap from Norfolk Southern, CSX, Union Pacific and Canadian National Railway) and sales of ferrous metals produced at the Roanoke Processing Yard. Promoted to oversee sales and operations with a dual focus on establishing strategic goals, and adding structure, across all operations. Served as President of sister company, American Railroad Equipment (spun-out on its own in 2000) specializing in dismantling of locomotives, recycling of parts (worldwide sales) and return of major components to Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific. Results: Dismantled 500+ retired/surplus locomotives. Partnered with Norfolk Southern on railcar “rebody” program; removed bodies of coal cars and returned truck frames, center sills and other components to Norfolk Southern. Results: Processed ~3,500 railcars, generating an additional 28,000 tons of scrap processed through the Roanoke facility. Restructured company into four Centers of Excellence (Commercial, Operations, Administration, Maintenance), each with leaders holding financial/managerial responsibility. Results: Built company “culture” from departmentalized focus into a united collaborative team focused on corporate goals. Revamped capital equipment strategy from buying used equipment to purchase of new equipment with full service contracts and extended warranties. Results: Impacted cost savings and profit over ensuing years
