I always knew I wanted to be a doctor. I grew up in my dad’s veterinary hospital. By the age of four, I was the resident flyswatter and cleaner of kennels. My entrepreneurial spirit developed at the age of five when I collected Coke bottles on the highway for a dime, which I would trade in for gingerbread and a Coke at the general store down the street.In ninth grade, the teacher asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. I said brain surgeon because naturally, they made the most money at the time. As I progressed through college, a life of purpose and adventure became more important than having money, so my love for animals prevailed, and I graduated vet school as a doctor at the age of 23.The promise of a successful career quickly vanished as I was fired from my first two jobs. Still reeling from that failure, my dad passed away unexpectedly when I was 27. I took over ownership of his practice and quickly crashed and burned.Within 12 months I was stressed out, burned out, broke, divorced and ready to quit. I was abusing drugs & alcohol in an attempt to cope with the stress I continually felt. Trying to get away from it all one week, I went to a seminar in Hawaii about how to manage your practice.When I returned my manager sat me down and said I got some bad news for you… someone had stolen $5,000 from the safe, my 2 best employees had quit, the police had been called to my practice, and someone had let my little dog Natasha out, and she was promptly run over and killed. In 7 days everything around me had collapsed. I was a failure before I really even got started.But then a funny thing happened…I learned a few tools and worked harder to learn what I didn’t know.I pursued marathons, Iron Man and adventure travel and gave up destructive habits. I used this new found energy to create time by systemizing tools that led to massive success.I used these tools to triple the size of the practice, also learning to grow a practice without even being there. Soon I acquired multiple practices.Once I mastered private practice I knew 2 things:I needed to help more pets and people andI needed to help other professionals who are going through the same thing I did.I know the struggle of practice ownership because I’ve lived and continue to live it. I have the tools to not only handle any situation that occurs but also lead to massive success.
