This project had three sperate components examining the development of methodologies to produce large amounts of chiral materials from a single chiral intermediate (tartaric acid). From these projects I have examined the air stability of synthetically challenging 3-membered phosphorous ring systems (phosphiranes), developed a procedure to allow the general detosylation of the 1,2-diamine scaffold (1,2-bis(tosylamides)), and explored the diastereomeric equilibrium of stereogenic nitrogen atoms in 1,2-diamine PdCl2 complexes through rational design of the ligand structure.The journey has taken me through some of the most difficult synthesis I've experienced so far, requiring challenging Schlenk techniques, and years of fine reaction development to get a single reaction to work. I've seen some incredibly interesting NMR phenomena, had the incredibly lucky experience of monitoring diastereomeric nitrogen atoms by 1H, 13C and 19F NMR, and churned through dozens of 31P NMR spectra on my way to ridiculous synthetic intermediates. My hypotheses have never felt sound enough and I've chased my fair share of imaginary intermediates and transition states through DFT computation.
