Friends of the Children is a national nonprofit that is breaking the cycle of generational poverty by giving children facing the highest risks the ability to create a new story. We do this by providing the most vulnerable children with a long-term, salaried, professional mentor, who we call a “Friend,” from kindergarten through high school graduation, 12 ½ years – no matter what. For more than 160 years, Southwestern Advantage has gained renown for its focus on "building character in young people" through the development of sales and leadership skills, as well as the training required to operate one's own business. Each summer, the program attracts over 1,000 students from various campuses worldwide.During two summers while attending college in Gainesville, FL, I embarked on a transformative summer college internship with Southwestern Advantage. Following an intensive week of sales training in Nashville, TN, I relocated to Ohio for my 1st year and Michigan for my second year to engage in door-to-door sales of educational products. This immersive experience demanded a rigorous schedule, with 14-hour workdays, six days a week, relying solely on the sales I made for income.
