About Jay Freer

Director of Fine Arts, a graduate (1978), teacher, and director at Lovett for 37 years, Jay has directed more than 93 plays and musicals in his career at Lovett, and has won the Woodward Award for Excellence in Teaching (1992) and the Alumni Excellence in Teaching Award (2006). Jay graduated as a Kenan Scholarship winner with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (1983).In the fall of 2007, Jay was chosen as one of four Loridan's Foundation grant recipients for his contribution to theater education over his then 24 year career.Professionally, Jay has directed at The Alliance Theatre, Actors Theatre of Atlanta, Theatrical Outfit, Aurora Theater, and Theatre in the Square.Until accepting the position of Director of Fine Arts at Lovett, Jay was also the Founder and Producing Artistic Director of Actors Theatre of Atlanta (ATA) – an all equity professional theatre company that operated from 2000 - 2006. Among the shows he directed for ATA are The Good Doctor, Collected Stories (Abie Award nominated in 2001), Underneath the Lintel (Southeastern premiere and chosen as the number one play of 2003 by the AJC and Creative Loafing), Talley’s Folly and Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol.Jay has also taught acting at The North Carolina School of the Arts, The South Carolina Governors School for the Arts as well as numerous professional classes. He studied in New York with Uta Hagen, considered “one of the greatest actresses and acting teachers of the 20th Century” and continues to study acting with her protégé, Ted Brunetti.About Actors Theatre of Atlanta:ATA based its work on the precept that the actor is the medium through which the audience experiences live theatre, Actors Theatre was the first Atlanta professional theatre company to open as an all Equity theatre company in 2001. ATA productions were known as "jewel box" experiences. ATA also produced fiscal responsibility theatre - never running a deficit.Specialties: Casting, directing, instruction in acting technique (ranging from youth to professional), organizational and administrative skills in educational, performing arts and professional theatre environments.
