The grant for the program is given by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The goal of my project was to reduce energy in the refining of mechanical pulp through impregnating the pulp with a particular chemical to increase its tensile strength, thus lowering the required energy consumed by the refiner. In my position, I designed and performed tensile enhancing experiments using a full factorial model based on specifications given by engineers at Catalyst's Crofton paper mill. I also performed Pulp Fractionation and Fibre Analysis to comprehend the mechanisms of different chemical treatments.
